On October 1, , Magic Journeys premiered as one of the opening-day attractions at the Journey Into Imagination pavilion in Walt Disney World 's EPCOT Center.
It was directed by Murray Lerner and featured a song composed by Robert and Richard Sherman. A preshow presentation, anchored by another Sherman Brothers song, "Makin' Memories", played before the film during its EPCOT Center run.
Starting on June 16, , it began a two-year run at Disneyland, first on the outdoor Space Stage and then inside the newly constructed Magic Eye Theater in Tomorrowland.
In December , Magic Journeys returned to Walt Disney World at the Fantasyland Theater inside the Magic Kingdom , where it was paired with the 3-D short Working for Peanuts.
The film played in this venue for six years until it closed in December in order to make room for The Legend of the Lion King.
Magic Journeys looked at the world through the eyes of a child. The film started with children running through a meadow and looking at clouds.
Someone blew on a dandelion and the seeds then flew away, turning into stars and then turned into the sun.
Next, the kids were seen flying a kite at the beach. The kite then turned into a bird, a fish, a school of fish, a flock of birds, bird wings, a Pegasus, a horse, and then finally into a merry-go-round.
While the children rode the carousel, they began reaching for a brass ring spinning next to the carousel; the carousel spun around the moon and bats flew out past the riders.
The moon became a witch, a mask, an Olmec head, and more until turning into a cat. I will read the 3rd book The Nirvana Blues because I have it on my shelf, but am in no rush to get to it.
Feb 29, Tim O'Neill rated it really liked it Shelves: 20th-century , april-delaney. Small town and surrounding area loved by locals as it is but greed and progress of Anglo powerbrokers want to change it for their benefit at the cost of its Mexican culture.
Apr 22, Eldaa rated it it was ok Recommends it for: New Mexicans, people who enjoyed Milagro Beanfield War. Shelves: fiction. Though all the books I enjoy do not necessarily have to have a happy ending, I generally enjoy happy books.
This is not a happy book. It's a good book. But it's a sad book and I wouldn't say I enjoyed it. Though it is worth reading.
Jul 12, Matt rated it it was amazing. Takes place in the same location as the Milagro Beanfield War, but after a few years have gone by.
It's a little bit more sarcastic, desperate, and serious than the first book, but the style stays mostly in tact. Just as good as the Milagro Beanfield War, but with a little less time for whimsy.
Nov 12, Charlie rated it really liked it Shelves: radical-politics , fun-reading , deep-fiction. A must read for all Taosenos People who live in Taos NM.
A scathing indictment of the new American frontier. Mar 22, Dennis rated it liked it Shelves: fiction. Important - 1 Well-written - 5 Kept my Attention - 3 Must Read - 1 Accessible - 5.
Interesting perspective of the machinations involved in "progress. Feb 10, Chanita rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , social-justice , bilingual , favorites , new-mexico , favorite-authors , my-classics , hispanic-heritage , native-american , spiritual-realism.
John Nichols is a genius. Feb 28, John rated it really liked it. Mar 15, David Roberts rated it it was amazing Shelves: new-mexico-author. The second in the New Mexico Trilogy, carrying forth with some of the favorite Chamisaville characters and adding new ones.
Almost as good as the first book, and just as funny. Jul 29, Robert rated it it was amazing. Excellent up to the very end. Humorous and captivating.
A pleasure to read. Sep 09, Michael Kraft rated it really liked it. A funny and angry book, not as much to my liking as The Milagro Beanfield War but still very worthwhile.
Sep 11, Jmolentin added it. Not as insightful or deep as Milagro Beanfield War, so a little disappointing. Jul 29, Richard Kravitz rated it really liked it.
Some bizarre sex I remember. Nice continuation of the story, crazy in places. There are no discussion topics on this book yet.

Two of his other novels have been made into films. The Wizard of Loneliness was published in and the film version with Lukas Haas was made in Another successful movie adaptation was of The Sterile Cuckoo, which was published in and was filmed by Alan J.
Pakula in Granted, I know the author would not want to go into details that may jeopardize relationships with his former bosses and coworkers, but I always love hearing both sides of Disney park stories, because as much as the popcorn glistens and the fairy dust sparkles, there are always two sides to every story.
Jan 04, Katy Roach rated it it was amazing. It felt like Kevin had sat me down and was verbally telling me the story of his career.
When I first started reading it in August, I remarked this to my dad. As I was reflecting on this book last night, I realized that Kevin wrote this book as a series of vignettes - just like A Christmas Story.
Oct 31, Hots Hartley rated it did not like it. Shallow and facetious. I think Kevin Rafferty tried to be funny, but the story just didn't feel informative, insightful, or inspirational.
The book didn't leave me with any takeaways, or any feeling that I could relate to the storyteller. He kept repeating that he wasn't much of a writer, but somehow wrote X, Y, and Z.
Words smacked of Shallow and facetious. Words smacked of false humility. The chapters held no common thread, other than the sequence of jobs that led to his work in Imagineering was random.
The anecdotes and stories themselves didn't leave any mark: I didn't feel like the characters did things out of the ordinary, or that there was any hustle or personality involved.
The entire book felt bleached of any kind of conflict, personal drive, or behind-the-scenes interaction. I don't recommend this at all.
May 04, Jess rated it it was amazing. Want to know what an Imagineer does without just a dry nuts and bolts lesson? This is the book for you.
With more than 40 fantastical years working for Disney under his creative belt, and an extensive track record of delighting Disney park guests with truly unforgettable experiences, Imagineer Kevin Rafferty has a story or two.
There's an endearing rags to rags to riches aspect to his story. Feb 17, Skyway to Adventureland rated it it was amazing. I really enjoyed this book.
Rafferty does a great job taking the reader through his career at Disney from dishwasher at Disneyland to a long and successful career in Imagineering.
Rafferty goes over his theme park projects that readers would be most interested in. And it seems there are interesting stories to go with every project.
An easy and overall enjoyable read for any Disney park fan. What a great story! If you are a fan of Walt Disney's Imagineers, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book.
I typically will read anything I can get my hands on from Disney Legends and this did not disappoint. Kevin has a great storytellers pace and style that makes it interesting and engaging.
